Snow Festival Photos - February 2000

Audrey and I enjoyed the snow festival very much. All the snow lanterns are built by hand and many are placed throughout Yonezawa by school children and businesses alike.

It was a long and cold winter in Yonezawa. This is our backyard after lots of snowfall.

Here's Audrey eating her favorite snack...not really. These are very popular in Japan. They are congealed balls of something like pureed vegetable material. They kind of look like balls of fat and don't have much taste to them.

The snow lanterns' light warmed the chilly night.

These lanterns stand at least six feet tall.

The happy couple braving the cold...

There was lots of entertainment at the Snow Festival including singing and this group of drummers.

The streets were full of vendors selling all kinds of food. This man was selling fish on a stick that he was cooking over hot coals. We opted for chicken fingers another man was selling!

Fire meets snow in this bank of light...
