Zao is a volcano about 1 and 1/2 hours north of Yonezawa by car. It is near the prefectural capital city of Yamagata City. It is 6,000 feet tall and last erupted in 1940. Zao has great skiing and onsens (hot springs). Our friends the Yoneno's took Mom, Dad, Audrey, and I up to the crater of Zao called Okama. This is a view looking down the side of Zao.
