 | The original tower on the site of today's Campanile was built in 1173 as a lighthouse for sailors in the lagoon. Galileo demonstrated his telescope to Doge Leonard Dona in 1609. The tower crashed to the ground in 1902 (of old age) and the current Campanile was finished in 1912. The huge bells in the tower ring out over the city. |
