The Todaiji Temple area was built in the mid-700s.  Emperor Shomu ordered construction of both the temple and the Daibutsu with the intention that the temple would become the center of all Buddhist temples in the country.  The structure seen here housing the Daibutsu dates from 1709 (it was destroyed several times through history.)  It is the largest wooden structure in the world.
